From the Superintendent's Desk
What Is a Real Education?
We all know the importance of the basics—reading, language arts, math, and their application in the real world. And when possible, we enrich our students' days with specials like art, music, P.E., and foreign language. In Willamina, we strive to offer as much non-core instruction as possible, despite the challenges of being a small district.
Budgets continue to tighten, and regulations are more intense than ever in my 35+ years in education. Yet through it all, we hold on to what really matters: student success—not just in the classroom, but in life.
A real education comes from people. It comes from teachers and staff who keep their focus on the bigger picture. It comes from a supportive community. Willamina is that kind of place. We are diverse. We embrace our roots. We celebrate our cultures and our unique relationship with the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. We also cherish the partnerships we’ve built with businesses, educators, and neighbors who are just as invested in our students’ futures as we are.
Recently, I sat down with Dr. Jessica Howard, President of Chemeketa Community College. Our conversation focused entirely on students—how we can bridge the gap between Willamina and the incredible opportunities Chemeketa offers across our region. We discussed transportation, expanding local course offerings, and the many workforce certificates and degree programs available—many at little or no cost to students.
I also shared a reality that many of our graduates face: sometimes, despite big dreams, life circumstances make it hard to access large college environments. Financial barriers, timing, or family responsibilities can get in the way.
Dr. Howard responded in a truly personal and powerful way. She has signed individual letters of acceptance for every graduating Willamina senior. Whether they choose to attend Chemeketa this fall or sometime later, they now have a personal invitation—and a tangible reminder that their future is real and supported.
This kind of connection shows the power of regional community colleges in small towns like ours. I support our hometown option more than ever.
Every senior who crosses the graduation stage in Willamina does so knowing they have a next step—and a team of people behind them who know them, believe in them, and will continue to cheer them on.
That’s the value of a Willamina education.
With pride,
Mike Gass
